Logbook Entry : 00042
March 11th, 2010
I woke up this morning and couldn't believe what I found. I headed outside to find that the temperature was quite nice. I wondered what I should do. Then as I thought, it hit me. Why don't we go for a hike. It had been some time since we last hiked a mountain. Come to thing about it, the last time we hiked a mountain, it was Mt. Kearsarge back in November. The weather was nice and we couldn't ask for better temps right now, so why not take advantage of it.
So we headed to the mountain, we noticed all the damage from the past storm that knocked down all sorts of trees. There were so many, it was sad. But the other thing we noticed, we started to see some snow. More than we have back at home. Which actually isn't hard since we have no snow left at home. Anyhow, we got to the mountain and got out of the car to find we were not the only ones there. There were about 3 other cars. Climbing Mt. Major was not just our great idea, but others had the same great idea as well.
As we hiked up the mountain trail, we came across 2 ladies with 2 big dogs. They took one look at Yorrick and started barking and acted as if they wanted to charge at him. It was really scary! Yorrick climbed up my leg, OUCH, and hide in my backpack. They ladies were kind enough to walk off the trail a little bit and let us pass. So we continued up the trail and I told Yorrick that the coast was clear. Yorrick popped his head out but stayed in my backpack. As we moved along, we got to a portion of the mountain that had been burned during a fire last summer. Very few trees were burned top to bottom, but it seemed as though the fire ran across the ground only burning the very bottom. Most of the trees I saw with some burns will survive but always have those burn scars.
At about an hour, we made it to the top. The view from the top was beautiful. It could have been better since it was now overcast, but I will not complain. It could be raining, or even snowing. So we sat at the top where there looks to be some sort of stone wall fort. There wasn't much to it, but nonetheless it was cool. I sat down and Yorrick got out. I ate an apple while enjoying the view, took a couple of pictures and thought about heading back down the mountain. As we started down the mountain, there were more people heading up the mountain. They were very nice to us as we passed.
Once in the car, we started home. It was good thing we got to the car when we did because it started to rain. Not a heavy rain, but just enough. The rain didn't bother us much since we just missed it on the trail, but what about those people we passed on the trail? I don't know but I am sure they will be just fine. Although I enjoyed the hike, Yorrick didn't seem to enjoy it as much as I did. He didn't get hurt and that is the most important thing.
