After the weekend of writing out Christmas cards to everyone I knew, Yorick and I headed to the post office to mail them out. We thought it would have been a nice day to walk to the post office, but soon after we left, we both wish we had driven. There was a pretty big storm this weekend, which actually missed New Hampshire for the most part, blanketing the middle and southern parts of New England. But even though we only had gotten a dusting, everyone got some of the winds that were on the back side of that storm. The letters I had almost flew out of my hands on several occasions. So I gripped them tighter and we continued on our way.
When we arrived at the post office, the line was out the door. There wasn't even a spot inside for Yorick! For about 15 minutes, we waited outside until the line moved far enough along to make it through the door. This was the longest 15 minutes of our lives. As if the wind wasn't cold enough walking to the post office, now we were standing in the wind. Try and keep warm in the wind while standing still! Inside it took us another 15 minutes to get to the teller, and she wasn't the most pleasant person. I asked her how her day was and she didn't reply. I asked her if she was all set for Christmas and she didn't reply again. Disgust kinda got the best of me when she asked about the stamps I needed for my cards. I said to her, "Why don't you stick it!", and she gave me the worst look ever. She asked "What did you say to me?" I repeated myself. She got all jumpy and she looked like she was about to come over the counter. Another teller came over and asked what was going on. I had explained to the second teller that the first teller seemed kinda rude and when it came time to put the stamps on my cards, that she could stick it for me. After about 5 minutes of trying to explain myself, the first teller went into the back room and the second teller finished cashing me out. I did apologize to the second teller about any confusion that may have come. "It was never my intention!"
So we left the post office in quite a hurry. People were looking at us like we had done something wrong. Kinda, but lay off a little will ya! So we walked home a bit faster than we did walking to. The wind seemed to be less cold this time around. When we got home, we huddled around the fire and thought about all the hard work the people at the post office do to make sure things arrive when they should. They too will have bad days like the rest of us and we should not fault them for it. Today too will end just as the day prior. And we can wake up the next morning and start all over again.
